Brightkey

Frequently asked questions

Ages, levels, online vs in-person, instruments and materials, scheduling, recitals — the things families and adult learners ask us most.

  • All of them. We start piano and violin as young as 5, guitar and drums around 7, and voice around 8 — and we love adult beginners, including total first-timers and people returning after decades away. The oldest student this term is 71.
  • More than okay — it’s our favourite place to start. Most of our students began as complete beginners. You’ll play something real in your very first lesson, and we move at exactly your pace. Progress at your pace is the whole idea.
  • For piano, guitar, and voice, online lessons work genuinely well with a phone or laptop and a decent connection — many students mix in-studio and online around their week. Violin and drums we recommend in-studio at least to start. Online lessons also cost a little less.
  • It’s a real 30-minute lesson for $20, with no commitment. You’ll try the instrument, meet your teacher, and leave with a sense of where you’d start. If you enroll, the $20 is credited toward your first month.
  • To start, no. The studio has pianos, a drum kit, and loaner guitars for lessons. For practice at home you’ll eventually want your own — we’ll recommend budget-friendly options, and for violin we partner with a local shop for rentals from about $25/month.
  • We ask for small, consistent practice rather than marathon sessions — often just 10–20 minutes most days, less for the youngest students. You’ll get a clear, doable weekly practice plan. Consistency beats intensity every time.
  • Never required, always available. We hold two low-pressure recitals a year where every student who wants a turn gets one — solo or alongside a friend. Many students surprise themselves and find it’s the highlight of the year. Stage fright welcome.
  • You’ll have a regular weekly slot. Monthly students get one free make-up lesson per term with notice, and term students get two. We teach afternoons and evenings on weekdays plus Saturday mornings.
  • Private lessons start at $38 for 30 minutes, with 45- and 60-minute options. Monthly packages of four weekly lessons start around $152/mo, and paying by term saves about 12%. Online and small-group lessons cost less; in-home adds a small travel fee.
